Our two superstar Volunteers of the Year share what inspires them to give their time to others, memorable ICP volunteering experiences, advice for those considering volunteering, and their aspirations to continue making an impact through volunteer service.

What inspired you to start volunteering and how has your journey evolved since then?

Mary Ann: My dad was always my inspiration as he set an example of volunteering himself. Every time I drive a client, I learn something—some history, their personal journeys, and I even got the name of a reputable appliance repair company.

Jeff: As an inspiration to me, my mom was always very active in the community and in church. I started participating in community activities in my teens and was highly engaged in the years following. Work and kids slowed me down a bit. I have been happy to be able to volunteer more in the last few years.

Can you share a memorable experience or moment while driving a client?

Jeff: It’s always been fun to give a ride to someone only to find that we know people in common, went to the same schools, or lived near each other. I gave a ride to a client who was family friends to my best friend’s family. I knew a lot about them already from old stories my buddy told me. So once we made the connection, we just stared at each other in shock. It felt like I was helping family.

Mary Ann: Have you ever had a blind passenger in your vehicle who gave you directions? Well it happened to me as I was taking one of our legally blind clients home from his appointment. He was spot on, and I have used that route several times since!

How do you balance your volunteer responsibilities with your personal and professional life?

Mary Ann: Since I have the luxury of being retired, that’s one less area of responsibility to juggle, which makes it easier for me to “make” the time for our older adult clients.

Jeff: I really appreciate the flexibility ICP volunteerism allows. I’ve been able to jump in when I can and help our clients when I’m available. It has been very convenient.

What advice would you give to others who are considering volunteer driving with ICP?

Jeff: The assistance we provide has a direct benefit to the older adults we help, and the impact is impressive. The comments I get from clients reflect their gratitude. It is uplifting to be part of this program.

Mary Ann: Anyone considering volunteering should most importantly realize that ICP works around your schedule, not theirs. There is flexibility during the week as well as weekends. Some are one-way rides, so that’s not as big of a time commitment if you are working or have other responsibilities. ICP only asks that you try your best to take 3-4 rides a month. So if one particular day of the week is more open for you, I am sure you could find a fit as there are several clients with recurring appointments. And the clients are so appreciative and friendly! Some are lonely and love to see other people.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes and aspirations for the future of your volunteer work and the impact it makes in our community?

Mary Ann: I am satisfied with my roles as volunteer driver and office help but am always open to new opportunities!

Jeff: I look forward to continuing my participation and I would like to encourage additional volunteers to join the fun. Losing the ability to drive is one of the biggest difficulties older adults face, and I am happy to help ease some of that burden.

Thank you, Mary Ann and Jeff, for your time and compassion volunteering with ICP in service of older adults! You are a blessing and an inspiration to others in our community and we are grateful for your continued contributions to ICP and our clients!
